Helen Donelan

Senior Lecturer


Helen is a Senior Lecturer within the School of Computing and Communications in the Faculty of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) at the Open University.

She studied Communications Engineering and Electronics at Liverpool University and then went on to work as a Design Engineer in the telecoms industry.

She completed her PhD at Leeds University in the area of mobile communications which was funded by a departmental scholarship and start-up company sponsorship. On completion of her PhD she worked at Leeds Metropolitan University, initially as a Researcher, and then as a Lecturer where she developed courses and taught in various areas including mobile communications.

She joined the Open University in 2006 as a Research Fellow, working on a project exploring how women returning to careers in STEM, were using online networks. 


Helen's current research interests include:

  • Social media for STEM engagement and networking in academia
  • Gender differences in the use of social media and online networks for professional practices
  • The use of ICTs in teaching
  • Gendered motivations and choices in STEM HE.
  • The use of virtualisation for teaching networking and server technologies
  • Learning and peer feedback in shared online spaces
  • Tools for enabling online collaboration and group work


Helen currently chairs a 60 credit Level 2 module called Communication and Information technologies. She also authors materials for several study blocks on this module.

She has also been involved in other modules at the Open University. She previously chaired the production and presentation of a 30 credit Level 1 module: Microsoft Server Technologies and was a member of the module team for the Level 1 module: Technologies in practice. She also authored materials for a Level 3 module: Communications Technologies.
