Prof Adrian Hopgood

Visiting Professor

Adrian Hopgood is Director General and Dean of the HEC Management School at the University of Liège in Belgium. He is also a visiting professor in the Faculty of Mathematics, Computing and Technology at the Open University. His main research interests are in intelligent systems and their practical applications.

Career

Adrian graduated with a BSc (Hons) in physics from the University of Bristol in 1981 and obtained a PhD from the University of Oxford in 1984. He subsequently spent two years with the software company Systems Designers plc (now part of EDS), where he was introduced to the world of artificial intelligence. He then joined the Open University as an academic and remained there for 14 years, except for a two-year spell as principal scientist at the Telstra Research Laboratories in Melbourne, Australia. At the Open University, Adrian was chair of the course T396: Artificial Intelligence for Technology and founder of the Intelligent Computer Systems Research Group. He joined Nottingham Trent University in 2001 before moving to De Montfort University in 2007, Sheffield Hallam University in 2011, and the University of Liège in 2015. He is a fellow of the BCS and a committee member for its Specialist Group on Artificial Intelligence. The third edition of his book, Intelligent Systems for Engineers and Scientists, was published by Taylor & Francis in 2012.
