Design PhDs at the Open University
The Design Group at The Open University (OU) offers a vibrant research environment. We are located in the Venables building on the OU campus in Milton Keynes, and have access to a range of facilities including a Fabrication Lab, Observation Labs, and an Eye Tracking Lab. The Design Group offers interaction across a spectrum of design cultures drawn from the arts, sciences, humanities and social sciences, and a wide variety of students have successfully graduated with a PhD.
The Design Group encourages applications for full- and part-time PhD research, and strong candidates may be eligible for full- or part-time studentships. You may be interested in one of our proposed areas of research (Link Design/PhD Programme/Potential Projects), or you may have a project of your own that links to one of our research themes. In either case, please contact the relevant member of staff.
If you have a different area of interest in mind or are simply interested in studying full-time or part-time for a PhD in design research please look at the Open University Research Degrees Prospectus for general information.
We have a long history of supervising a broad range of part-time PhD projects, nationally and globally, and have the facilities and experience to ensure that distance and time constraints are not a barrier to success. For example, our Virtual Research Environment is a unique platform for providing support and training to our research students working at a distance. For many part-time students, projects relate closely to work and career aspirations and we are interested in hearing from people who would have a proposal in mind.

Funding Opportunities for Doctoral Training
We are a member of the Design Star Centre for Doctoral Training (Link Design/Phd Programme/Design Star), along with four other leading UK design departments. This AHRC funded collaboration offers up to 12 fully funded studentships a year, and provides training that is supported by a broad range of expertise, covering more topics, methods and approaches than is possible in a single institution.
See the Design Star page for further information.
The Design Group at the Open University is part of the Department of Engineering and Innovation, which offers a limited number of full- and part-time research studentships. These provide a maintenance grant as well as academic fees. In addition, other scholarships and industry funding may be available. For further enquiries, please contact Emma Dewberry.
