Joanna’s research and consultancy experience includes work on science and innovation policy, science & technology capacity building, life sciences innovation,  public private partnerships (PPPs), innovation and development. She combines policy research and academic studies and her work has included the development of national policies, evaluation of national, regional and sectoral policies, analysis and evaluation of global health initatives and the development of new methodological approaches to foster more adaptive policymaking. She has worked in Central America, India, Southern Africa, Central and Eastern Europe and Russia.  Her current research interests include open innovation and inclusive innovation aimed at and involving low income populations.

Joanna has a part-time appointment at RAND Europe where until recently she was Director of Innovation and Technology Policy and is currently a Senior Research Fellow.  At RAND Europe she has lead projects for the UK Dept. of Health, Public Health England, The Structural Genomics Consortium, BBSRC, the Wellcome Trust, Qatar Foundation, Merck, Pfizer and GSK.

Joanna is an active senior member of the INNOGEN Institute.  She is Vice President of Globelics, an initiative to bring together scholars and researchers in innovation and international development from across the world and to focus attention on innovation dynamics and policy in developing countries.  She is also on the BBSRC Science in Society strategy committee. She is also a member of the WIOMSA MASMA Programme Committee.

Exploring the possibilities and limitations of new types of engagement between private and public sectors in bridging the gap  between the promise of cience and technology and innovation on the one hand and delivery of substantive benefit to people on the other hand.

Joanna’s teaching activity has spanned the range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses that DPP produces.
