As a research student in Computing and Communications, you will contribute to leading research as part of a diverse and collaborative research community. Our approach to research reflects the OU’s mission: to harness technological innovation to empower people everywhere, openly and at scale.

We offer both full-time and part-time PhD and MPhil degrees on research projects related to our main thematic research areas. Browse our Student projects to discover some of the things we do.

While we expect part-time studies to be self-funded, we offer a number of fully funded competitive full-time PhD studentships every year. Check our News page regularly to discover the latest opportunities.

Visit our Enquiries and Application page to find out more about our degrees and how to apply.

Studying with the OU

The success of our vibrant PhD student programme is due to a comprehensive PhD support infrastructure and training programme that operates through students’ PhD studies, including a strong focus on community building and peer-to-peer learning, weekly research seminars, regular on-line seminars for part-time students, funding to attend conferences and an annual student conference. Our PhD students have gained best paper awards at prestigious international conferences and have taken up research positions world-wide in academia, private companies (such as Google, Nokia and the BBC) and non-profit organisations.
